Angela Angel / Hair + Makeup
When I was growing up in North Carolina, my answer to “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was always “A Makeup Artist”. This inspired lots of confused and pitying looks. By convincing many of these people to sit down in front of me…I would pull out my fishing tackle box full of makeup and brushes to create a makeup look from one of the hundreds of vogue magazines that lined my bedroom shelves. I had confidence beyond my years and certainly know-how. I was “fake it till you make it” before the term was coined! This led my mother’s friend to ask me to come do hair and makeup on an ad she was working on for Hanes Hosiery. Even though I was only 15, my mother let me skip school that day to go to work. Off I went with my tackle box under one arm and a set of hot rollers under the other. LOL. It was pure nepotism but I was instantly hooked.
Outside of work, I am a true Old House Nerd. When ever I plan to visit a new city I look up historic districts and look for Air BnB’s close by. I love touring landmark buildings and get geeked out on things like original built in cabinets. I am in the (never ending) process of rehabbing my own house…She turns 100 in 2022.
I love teamwork and camaraderie among artists. I was hired to lead a team of artists on a Frito Lay job to create several monsters from Universal Studios. I asked my special effects artist friends to come to up from Austin to help. We created Frankenstein, His Bride, Dracula and the Wolf Man. We designed the wigs and makeups from scratch with no guidance from Universal. Then at the last minute, we got word that they were sending a team from LA to watch us and approve the makeups on the day of the shoot. I am proud to say we passed each test without anything being redone. Way to go Texas!
Angela Angel is my real name. Born with it…never changed it.
